In the olden days when steam ships left England for places such as India it got very hot in the cabins with the sun beating down in the afternoons.The steamships charged extra for shaded cabins, so if you could afford it one would purchase a port cabin on the way out and a starboard cabin on the way back.
If you were rich enough it was Port Out, Starboard Home, hence the phrase POSH.
